It's not trivial, but it's possible. I've done something like this in this scenario. I started with a greyscale image and then modified it to colour it. Have a look at the source there if you're interested.

This would be really useful for character customization. If yu could create a project with source code available for color changing it would be much appreciated!
Could you not just open the wombat image in a image editor and change the color?
