that is because the stars are spawned in a square and they go further and further away from you which makes the stars go closer together and makes a square like shape.
Yes, the drift is annoying: if the rotation wasn't implemented it would be easy to reset the position of a star after it has passed from the camera's view. Now, the player may want to turn back to where a star was.
