1. We downloaded the pure java version. 2. We ran the installer. 3. We ran the installed "greenfoot" file. 4. We then got a splash screen 5. We were then asked to choose from 4 choices including run the tutorials. 6. No matter what we select : the selection screen disappears and a program called "Boot" continues to run. 7. The Boot program has some menu items: Class , Edit, Tools, Options but no UI and definitely not at all like the screenshots in the documentation

Hi rosie, You haven't specified but it sounds like you're on a Mac? You should ideally use the Mac-specific version of Greenfoot in that case; out of curiosity, why is it that you are using the generic (pure Java) installer?

Because my dad already has a jvm downloaded ( he programs for a living ) - so having 2 jvm's is a waste of space. And why is this question relevant to the issue that the pure java version doesn't work?

Ok, although unless disk space is at a real premium I'd suggest this is the easiest route.

I think you mean how is this question relevant - in which case, it's relevant because if the Mac package works, there's no obvious need to use the pure Java package, and that would make the issue moot. I suggest contacting the support team (of which I'm a member) with complete information about the problem. See this page.
