Two main reasons behind poverty is the lack of resources and poorly managed governments. The core issue is that there are over 16 million children under the age of 18 that live in poverty in the US alone. Stress is very much involved in this issue. The more stress a child has growing up, the more likely they would be living in poverty due to the effect of cognitive stress on an adult’s working memory performance. The thing that is most affected by childhood poverty is the amount of poverty there is, it continues to increase!
The BIOLOGY: stress stunts productivity of mind. Release of certain hormones and chemicals inhibits some developments in child’s body.
THE GOVERNMENT:SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) was created by the USDA in order to offer nutritional assistance to low-income families. They allow families to buy food and prevent hunger. Poorboy is from a low-income family, since he is eligible for SNAP benefits, his fridge will be stocked up and he doesn’t have to be hungry anymore. The department of Health and Human Services has a block grant program called TANF. TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) gives needy families work opportunities and temporary financial assistance by giving states the money necessary to create and apply their welfare programs. Both of Poorboy’s parents are unemployed, therefore, his family is eligible for receiving financial assistance and work opportunities. Medicaid covers the expenses for medical care such as doctor’s appointments and hospital care costs. It is for low-income families, the disabled, and the elderly. Poorboy is from a low income family, and since his family is covered by Medicaid, he can go to the doctor’s office when he gets sick.
The ISLAM: Sadaqah and Zakah. (76:8 and 9:60) Allah says in the Quran (76:8), “And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,”
